A motorcyclist was killed in an accident in downtown Seattle, Washington, while his passenger sustained serious injuries. The accident itself occurred during the late afternoon on Saturday April 23, 2011 near the Fourth Avenue ramp on Interstate 90.
The motorcyclist was discovered dead at the accident scene, and the passenger was immediately taken to a hospital. It was thought that no other vehicles were involved with the accident; however, the authorities did not disclose the cause of this accident right away. During the investigation of this motorcycle crash, two lanes of the Interstate 90 - and the Fourth Avenue on-ramp - were closed.
It was also noted that this accident occurred one day after the Washington State Patrol stated that the rising cost of gas would result in more people choosing to ride motorcycles and in turn result in more motorcycle fatalities.
A Washington State Patrol officer stated that he did not know for sure if research proves that there is a direct correlation between the increase in motorcycles on the road and the increase in motorcycle fatalities. In order to ensure the safety of all vehicles on the road, the Washington state troopers also stated that they were going to increase their highway patrols to help to ensure that both motorcycles and vehicles remain safe on the road. Over 200 people have been killed in motorcycles accidents in the state of Washington, with 2008 having the most motorcycle accident fatalities.
